For near surface parameters the distinction between land and sea points may be crucial, for example for 2 m temperature, precipitation or 10 m wind. As mentioned above (2.3.2.), the model land-sea mask defines land and sea model gridpoints. Due to the limited horizontal grid resolutions users should be careful in using the direct model output near coastlines, small islands and narrow peninsulas as the marine influence if often over-estimated. Also here statistical interpretation schemes might be beneficial, in particular for the temperature forecasts.
